The Impact of Elddis Moving Caravan Production to Germany: A Closer Look

The Impact of Elddis Moving Caravan Production to Germany: A Closer Look

One of Britain's best-known caravan brands has confirmed a significant change to how its caravans will be built. Elddis is moving production to Germany, but insists the identity, specification, and customer support of its caravans will remain firmly rooted in the UK.

The news will raise eyebrows among loyal Elddis owners, many of whom will have bought in part because of the brand's roots in Consett, County Durham. Here's what we know.

THE PLAN IN A NUTSHELL

Elddis has confirmed that its next generation of caravans will be manufactured at Plant Isny in Germany, one of the established production facilities within the Erwin Hymer Group, the European leisure vehicle giant that owns the Elddis brand.

The caravans will still be conceived and directed from Consett. The UK team retains responsibility for brand strategy, product direction, design, sales, marketing, customer service, technical support, and aftersales. The intention is that all Elddis-branded caravans will be NCC approved, so they'll meet the same certification standards UK buyers expect.

In other words: German-built, British-specified.

THE BRANDS THAT AREN'T MAKING THE MOVE

Not every name in the Elddis stable is coming with them. Both the Xplore and Buccaneer caravan ranges are being discontinued as part of this transition.

That's a significant loss for the market. Xplore carved out a loyal following as an accessible, value-focused range, a solid entry point for first-time caravan buyers. Buccaneer sat at the opposite end of the spectrum, a premium brand with a reputation for high specification and quality finish that appealed to experienced tourers with an eye for detail.

Their discontinuation narrows the choice available to UK buyers at both ends of the market, and will come as a blow to owners of both brands who were hoping to upgrade within the same family.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

This announcement follows on from a review Elddis launched in March this year, when the company said its caravan operation was under consideration as part of a wider strategic shift. That shift is one being felt across the industry. A number of European manufacturers are moving resources away from caravans and towards motorhomes and campervans, where demand has been stronger in recent years.

Earlier this month, Bürstner announced it would stop caravan production entirely from the 2027 season. Elddis has taken a different route, keeping the brand alive and the range going, but rethinking where and how they're made.

WHAT'S THE TIMELINE?

The first look at the new range is expected at a private dealer event in spring 2027, with a full public launch planned for the October 2027 NEC Show, where Elddis will have a dedicated stand.

That's over a year away, so there's limited detail on what the new caravans will actually look like. Further information is expected closer to that dealer preview.

WHAT ABOUT EXISTING OWNERS?

If you already own an Elddis caravan, the message from the company is straightforward: nothing changes for you. Customer service, technical support, and aftersales all remain with the Consett operation. The people who know the product and look after owners day to day aren't going anywhere.

DOES IT MATTER WHERE A CARAVAN IS BUILT?

That's the question plenty of Elddis loyalists will be asking. Plant Isny is a well-regarded manufacturing facility, it produces vehicles for several respected European brands within the Erwin Hymer Group, so there's no reason to assume quality will suffer. If the UK team genuinely drives specification and design decisions with British buyers in mind, the end product could be every bit as well-suited to the UK market as what's come before.

Whether buyers will feel the same way about a caravan badged Elddis but built in Bavaria is a different question entirely. Brand loyalty runs deep in caravanning, and the Consett connection has always been part of the Elddis story.

The message confirmed the European production shift and pointed to a portfolio refresh due to launch from August 2026. New model year 27 products will be previewed at an Elddis Experience event in June, ahead of a public debut at the NEC Motorhome & Caravan Show later in the year.

The 2027 NEC Show will be a telling moment. We'll be watching.
