Hundreds of jobs may be affected at Elddis, part of the Erwin Hymer Group (EHG), after the company announced on Tuesday, 3rd March, that it is undertaking a “strategic shift” in response to falling caravan demand.
Now, two years after a major restructure led to the loss of around 190 jobs, the company has announced a switch in strategy which will bring production to an end at the Consett site.
Despite nearly 60 years of caravan manufacturing, Elddis revealed plans to halt production at its Consett site, pointing to “declining caravan registrations and growing demand for campervans and motorhomes in the UK.” The company emphasised that any decisions will follow a formal consultation process.
Chris Short, managing director of EHG UK, explained the reasoning behind the move:
“The new motorhome and campervan ranges will be specified and designed by Elddis, utilising specialised production sites of our parent company EHG. This relocation of production gives Elddis unlimited access to the EHG high-performance production network, increasing speed to market and strengthening our product portfolio with high-quality products tailored to UK customers.”
Elddis is currently “assessing its manufacturing options,” with a final decision expected by the end of April.
Mr Short acknowledged the impact on staff:
“We know that the consultation process is deeply personal and unsettling for many; however, due to the market conditions, we need to explore strategic changes for the best future for Elddis. It is thanks to the work, dedication, and professionalism of our employees at Consett that we have built our reputation and made the Elddis brand what it is today.”
He stressed that no employment decisions have been finalised and that the company’s priority remains its people:
“We are committed to handling this situation with empathy, respect, and transparency. Where possible, redeployment opportunities within EHG will be offered to impacted employees.”
Local officials have also expressed concern. Cllr Darren Grimes, Deputy Leader of Durham County Council, described the announcement as a “real blow for the town,” saying:
“We are disappointed to learn of the decision by Erwin Hymer to cease production at its Consett site.”
As Elddis navigates this major shift, the future of caravan production in Consett hangs in the balance, highlighting the challenges traditional manufacturers face in a changing market.
ELDDIS CHARTS FUTURE WITH “ELDDIS. UNLIMITED.” INITIATIVE
An e-mail sent to customers on Wednesday 4th March confirms that production will be moving from the Consett facility to Europe, as part of a broader strategic shift. The company says the move aligns with its vision for a modernised product range suited to current market conditions.
The message to customers highlights the key points of the new “Elddis. Unlimited.” strategy:
