Meet the Staria Camper Concept: Hyundai’s Bold Vision for Next-Gen Van Life

Barely had the ink dried on the Hyundai Staria's Brussels motor show debut before the Korean brand turned up in Stuttgart with something altogether more exciting: a fully-kitted camper concept that transforms its futuristic electric MPV into a genuinely capable off-grid retreat on wheels.

Unveiled at the 2026 CMT camping and tourism trade fair, the Staria Camper Concept is Hyundai's way of asking a very reasonable question: why buy a static caravan when you could drive something that looks like it just rolled out of a near-future sci-fi film? It's not yet confirmed for production, Hyundai is actively gathering feedback from show visitors, but if the reaction we suspect they're getting is any indication, a green light should be a formality.

POP-UP ROOF, SOLAR PANELS & GENUINE OFF-GRID AMBITION

The headline feature is an integrated, electrically operated pop-up roof that expands the interior when you're parked up, then tucks itself away neatly for the drive. That roof does double duty. Mounted on top is a 520W lightweight composite solar panel capable of generating up to 2.6kWh of electricity per day under optimal sunlight conditions, enough to run the van's onboard systems without needing a campsite hook-up.

The off-grid package extends further. A 36-litre refrigerator, a portable shower that plugs into the rear of the van, and a cabin temperature control system are all managed through an onboard computer. Whether you're parked up at a remote lakeside spot or a well-equipped campsite, the Staria has your essentials covered.

CLEVERLY DESIGNED FOR LIFE INSIDE (AND OUTSIDE)

Hyundai has clearly thought carefully about the day-to-day reality of van life rather than just ticking a box labelled "camping." The two front seats swivel around electrically to create a proper lounge and dining area so no more contorting yourself over a centre console. At night, the rear seats fold flat into a generous double bed for two.

THE ELECTRIC BACKBONE: 249 MILES AND 20-MINUTE CHARGING

Underpinning all of this is the Staria's impressive electric platform. Hyundai has confirmed an 84kWh battery delivering up to 249 miles of WLTP range, enough for a proper road trip between charges. Better still, the 800V architecture means you can go from 20% to 80% charge in just 20 minutes at a compatible rapid charger, which is genuinely fast for a vehicle of this size and weight class.

For camping use, the combination of that battery, the solar roof, and smart energy management across the onboard systems means the Staria Camper could credibly manage extended stays off-grid without anxiety, especially in sunnier European climates.

WILL IT ACTUALLY GO ON SALE?

Hyundai hasn't committed to production yet, the brand used the CMT show floor as a live focus group, with an online survey running alongside the physical display to capture visitor sentiment. Given the level of detail in this concept, the integrated engineering, and the obvious appetite for well-designed electric campers in the European market, it would be a genuine surprise if this didn't eventually lead somewhere real.

The Staria itself is also new enough that full commercial details are still emerging. But with the van's fundamentals already looking strong, long range, rapid charging, and a distinctive, space-age design language, the camper conversion feels like a natural and compelling extension of the lineup.
