Your Guide to Data SIMs for Caravans, Motorhomes & Campervans

Your Guide to Data SIMs for Caravans, Motorhomes & Campervans

So, you've kitted out your caravan, motorhome, or campervan with a Maxview Roam or Roam X, and your mobile haven is now Wi-Fi enabled. But what happens when you venture beyond the reach of campsite Wi-Fi? That's where a data SIM becomes your ultimate travel companion, freeing you from the hunt for elusive hotspots and keeping you connected wherever your wanderlust takes you.

Imagine streaming your favourite shows under a starry sky in the Scottish Highlands or video-calling family from a picturesque French village – all thanks to a reliable 4G or even super-fast 5G signal. This guide will help you navigate the world of data SIM plans, ensuring you pick the perfect one for your adventures, both in the UK and across Europe.

DEMYSTIFYING DATA SIM PLANS: YOUR MOBILE INTERNET POWERHOUSE

Think of a data SIM plan as your mobile phone's data-only cousin. For a monthly fee, typically ranging from £15-£25, you receive a SIM card. Pop this into your Maxview Roam or Roam X (or a dedicated 5G-compatible router), and voilà! Your device connects to a mobile broadband network, giving you internet access via 3G, 4G, or 5G, just like on your phone.

The key differentiator between plans is the amount of data you get each month, from a modest 5GB to glorious unlimited allowances. This data allowance is the primary driver of the monthly cost.

You'll find data SIM plans offered by the UK's major mobile networks – Three, Vodafone, O2, and EE – as well as by smaller providers like GiffGaff, VOXI and Lebara, who often leverage the infrastructure of the big four.

Tip: Always double-check you're buying a "data SIM" plan, as some providers differentiate between phone SIMs and data SIMs. A data SIM is essential for your Maxview Roam or Roam X.

HOW MUCH DATA DO YOU REALLY NEED?

Choosing the right data allowance is paramount. Without a doubt, video streaming is the biggest data consumer. Hours of Netflix, Amazon Prime, or YouTube can quickly eat through your allowance. With 5G, content loads faster, which can inadvertently lead to higher consumption as you're more likely to stream in higher resolutions or download large files.

Data Usage at a Glance:

  • HD video (1080p): approx. 2-3 GB per hour
  • 4K Ultra HD video: approx. 7-8 GB per hour
  • Emails, browsing, maps: typically under 1 GB per day for moderate use
  • Video calls (e.g. FaceTime/Zoom): approx. 1-1.5 GB per hour

Choosing Your Allowance:

  • 10-30 GB/month: Suitable for basic browsing, emails, and occasional social media. Not enough for regular video streaming.
  • 30-100 GB/month: A good all-rounder. Allows a couple of HD films per week alongside general browsing and social media. May hit limits with regular 4K or remote working.
  • Unlimited: Best for heavy users. Regular HD/4K streaming, online gaming, or remote working. Unlimited plans are often competitively priced and offer peace of mind with 5G speeds.

Unlimited data plans are often surprisingly affordable compared to high-limit capped plans, making them a popular choice for regular travellers who want maximum flexibility.

NAVIGATING EUROPEAN ROAMING: THE POST-BREXIT LANDSCAPE

Crossing into Europe introduces 'fair usage' limits and potential additional charges. Since Brexit, most UK mobile networks have adjusted their EU roaming policies. Your generous UK data allowance may be capped when abroad, and you could face daily or monthly fees for the privilege of staying connected.

Important: Roaming policies change regularly. The information below is accurate as of March 2026, but always check directly with your provider before travelling. Pay particular attention to whether 5G roaming is available and whether it incurs additional costs or has separate limits.

NETWORK-BY-NETWORK BREAKDOWN

  • O2: Continues to offer inclusive EU roaming up to a fair usage limit of 25 GB per month on Pay Monthly plans, with no daily charge. If your UK allowance is higher, you'll be capped at 25 GB. Excess usage is charged at approximately £3.50 per GB. A continuous roaming clause applies (typically 63 days within a four-month period).
  • EE: For customers who joined or upgraded on or after 7 July 2021, EE charges £2.47 per day to use your UK allowance in their EU roaming zone (updated from the previous £2.59/day). A fair usage cap of 50 GB per month applies. Some premium plans include a Roam Abroad Pass as a Smart Benefit, waiving the daily charge.
  • Vodafone: Now charges £2.25 per day (reduced from £2.42) to use your UK allowance across most European countries. A 25 GB per month fair usage limit applies. Vodafone also offers European Roaming Passes (e.g. £12 for 8 days or £17 for 15 days), which can be better value for shorter trips. Some 'Xtra' SIM plans include roaming.
  • Three: Charges £2 per day for Go Roam in Europe destinations. A 12 GB per month fair usage limit applies to data used while roaming. For Pay As You Go, Three has also introduced roaming charges, so check their latest add-ons before travelling.
  • VOXI: Requires the purchase of a European Roaming Pass (from £2.45 per day) to use your allowance in Europe. A fair usage policy of 20 GB per 30-day plan applies to data while roaming.
  • Tesco Mobile — Updated Policy: Tesco Mobile's Home From Home benefit has been extended until at least 2027 and is now available to all Tesco Mobile customers, not just those who joined before a specific date. This means EU roaming with no additional daily charges and use of your full UK data allowance abroad, making it one of the most generous roaming policies among UK networks.
  • GiffGaff: Offers EU roaming with a 5 GB fair usage cap per month. After 5 GB, charges apply at 10p per MB, so this is best suited to light users or those who won't be relying on data heavily while abroad.

Ukraine & Moldova Now in EU Roaming Zone: From 1st January 2026, Ukraine and Moldova joined the EU roaming area. If your plan includes EU roaming, you should now be able to use your allowance in these countries under the same terms as other European destinations. Always confirm with your specific provider.

Despite these restrictions, a UK SIM can still work well for many European trips. A week in France with an EE data SIM and its 50 GB allowance, even with a daily roaming charge, may be perfectly sufficient. However, if you're a frequent or long-term traveller, a local foreign data SIM can be more economical.

THE MULTI-NETWORK ADVANTAGE: SEAMLESS CONNECTIVITY

For those who want ultimate connectivity and freedom from roaming headaches, multi-network SIM cards offer a compelling alternative. Providers like BroadbandGo offer SIMs that intelligently switch between available networks rather than relying on one.

Key Benefits:

  • Superior coverage in remote areas: Your SIM automatically connects to the strongest available network, minimising dropouts even in off-the-beaten-path locations.
  • 5G fallback: Where 5G coverage is patchy, the SIM falls back seamlessly to the best 4G signal available.
  • Hassle-free EU roaming: Some providers (like BroadbandGo) allow use of your entire data allowance across numerous EU countries with no fair usage limits — genuinely seamless cross-border connectivity.

Trade-off: Multi-network SIMs generally offer less data per pound than single-network plans. They're ideal for light to moderate users focused on browsing, emails, and maps. Heavy streamers or remote workers may find a traditional SIM more cost-effective.

eSIMS: THE MODERN ALTERNATIVE

One area not covered in earlier versions of this guide is the rise of eSIM technology. An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your device. There's no physical card to insert or swap. For travellers, this opens up a number of practical advantages.

Why Consider an eSIM?

  • No need to physically swap SIM cards when crossing borders
  • Multiple plans can be stored on one device, allowing you to switch between them as needed
  • Dedicated travel eSIM providers (such as Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad) offer affordable data plans for specific countries or regions
  • Growing support from routers: check whether your device supports eSIM before purchasing

eSIMs are especially useful for travellers who frequently move between countries or who want a separate EU data plan alongside their UK SIM, avoiding roaming charges entirely by switching to a local plan on arrival.

Important: Not all routers support eSIM. Always check hardware compatibility before purchasing an eSIM plan for use in your device.

PAY AS YOU GO VS. PAY MONTHLY: FLEXIBILITY VS. VALUE

When choosing your data SIM, you'll face the classic dilemma: Pay As You Go (PAYG) or a rolling/fixed Pay Monthly contract.

  • Pay As You Go (PAYG): Offers maximum flexibility — no contract, cancel anytime. Ideal if you only use your caravan for a few months a year or want to switch networks easily. The trade-off is a higher effective cost per GB, and EU roaming options may be more limited.
  • Pay Monthly: Requires a commitment of 12 or 24 months, with early exit fees. In return, you get a lower monthly cost for the same data, and often better EU roaming inclusions. If you're on the road most of the year and prefer consistent billing, this is typically the more practical and economical choice.

DOES YOUR CHOSEN NETWORK REALLY MATTER? COVERAGE IS KING

While EE often leads on overall 4G coverage in the UK, 5G rollout is rapidly expanding across all major networks. But 'generally good' coverage isn't good enough when you're relying on a connection in a specific location.

Your best course of action: check the network's coverage map for every postcode you plan to visit. Look for not just 4G, but 5G coverage too, especially if your router (such as the Maxview Roam 5G) is 5G-capable.

UK Mobile Network Coverage Checkers:

When you enter a postcode, aim for 'Good indoor and outdoor 4G and 5G coverage' where available. Even if 5G isn't available everywhere yet, a 5G-compatible router will typically pick up the best available 4G signal, making it a future-proof investment.

If a network shows only patchy 4G or 3G coverage, explore other providers. While 3G is adequate for basic browsing, video streaming will likely suffer. In such cases, consider pre-downloading content before you leave home. Most streaming apps now support offline viewing.

READY TO FIND THE BEST DATA SIM FOR YOUR NEEDS?

Choosing the right data SIM, and making sure your equipment is 5G-ready, can transform your caravan, motorhome, or campervan into a truly connected mobile base. By understanding your data needs, navigating roaming policies, and checking coverage, you'll be well prepared for seamless adventures wherever the road takes you.
